Volunteer with your group 6/2/2009 - 9/2/2009 Bring a group out on the harbor to spend a day serving your park alongside your friends or co-workers. By volunteering, groups can improve the health of the islands by removing invasive plants, clearing and maintaining trails and forts, as well as performing light construction and planting. Every bit of work helps improve island access for future visitors. Groups can range from 10-25 people, ages 14 and older. Reservations are required.

Boston Light Climbing Tour 6/18/2009 - 10/10/2009 A three-hour adventure begins with a boat cruise and a narrated tour on a comfortable vessel through Boston Harbor Islands, where you will experience the geology and rich maritime history of the islands with a National Park Service ranger. Disembark at Little Brewster to visit the first and oldest lighthouse station in the United States, and the last to retain a Coast Guard keeper. Climb the 76 steps up Boston Light's tower and see the historic Fresnel lens. Enjoy this unique and unforgettable view of Boston Harbor from its most recognized gateway, accompanied by a National Park Service Ranger and the U.S. Coast Guard auxiliary.

Thompson Island Treks: Salt Marsh Walk 6/21/2009 - 8/30/2009 Explore the salt marshes and natural beauty of Thompson Island on this 90 minute guided walking tour. After a brief boat ride from Spectacle Island to Thompson, the tour contrasts a classic New England salt marsh and a newly "restored" salt marsh that is giving home to a great diversity of plant and animal life. Thompson's rolling hills and meadows also give clues to a past that includes a Native American trading post, a 19th century farm school, and America's first high school marching band.

Children and adult volunteers from the audience have a chance to show their star quality playing parts in the show! Parts include Fairy Queens and Kings, a Ravenous Raven, Grumbo the Giant, a Giant Carp, the Evil Rats, and of course, Tiny Tom himself. Performances at 12:15 pm & 1:30 pm

Stewardship Saturday on Grape Island 7/11/2009 Come join us for some hands-on learning as we remove invasive plants from important natural and historic areas of the park! We will explore the local flora and fauna and discuss the ecology and natural history of the park as we work side by side to improve habitat for the native birds, bugs, and flowers of our local national park.
Pepperweed will remain in our sights as we head back to beautiful Grape Island for Pepperweed Pulling. The pepperweed invasion in the freshwater wetland on the south side of the island was not tackled on our last visit so will return July 11th to finish off this lasting Pepperweed patch. The area is opening up for native marsh rosemary, marsh elder, seaside goldenrod and other native biodiversity are benefiting from our work.

Through hands-on activities, children will learn to have fun outdoors while keeping their impact to a minimum. Parents will learn how to keep their kids enthusiastic, interested and happy on a hike. Each child in attendance will receive a FREE PEAK/LNT hang tag that can be attached to a backpack or book bag to remind them of the 7 Leave No Trace Principles and what they have learned. Southern Lighthouse Tours 7/18/2009 After passing by Long Island and Deer Island lights in Boston Harbor, we will hug the South Shore getting as close as possible to Minot's Ledge, Scituate, Gurnet and Bug lights. On the return journey we will view BostonLight and Graves Light. Extensive narration throughout. Route always at captain's discretion. Boat departs from Boston Harbor Cruises, Long Wharf, Boston. For this habitat restoration program we will delight in the area around Lovells Island's salt basin, cutting back newly sprouted Phragmites to allow native plants to thrive. We will also combat the bamboo like Japanese Knotweed which grows at various locations on Lovells Island.

Snow in Summer: Lovers Rock 7/26/2009 In 1786, two lovers were found in each other’s arms, frozen to death on Lovells Island. Learn about the first hut of refuge ever built, that equipped with necessities to survive until rescuers arrive. This series is tribute to writer, storyteller and island folk-hero Edward Rowe Snow (1902-1982) who shared his love of the Boston Harbor Islands with the world.

Picnic with the Adams on Grape Island 8/22/2009 John and Abigail Adams wrote over a thousand letters to each other. They had plenty to tell one another during the months (sometimes years) that John was away from home helping found a new nation. From their initial courtship in 1761 through their time as President and First Lady over three decades later, the couple shared insights on their lives and times. Take a boat ride, and bring a picnic lunch to Grape Island. In their own words, two costumed interpreters will reenact John and Abigail’s fascinating correspondence.

Edward Rowe Snow Celebration 8/23/2009 This years marks the 80th anniversary of the creation of the Flying Santa program and the 30th anniversary of Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands!
